The Off Ice Program

The CTSC provides an off ice programme, offering classes for kids and adults. The class content varies for each of these categories, focusing on the needs of the group.
The kids programme offers a wide spectrum of skills and exercises, At the CTSC we strongly believe ' a better body makes for better skating'

The adult classes focus on theory, jumping and balance. This helps skaters with an 'adult mind set' explore logical progressions and techniques in a non on ice setting. Therefore the adult can spend less time thinking on the ice and more time skating.

The kid's classes are incorporated into the membership fees, while the adult program is offered separately.

Overview

The programme teaches gives skaters the tools and techniques in off ice jumping, balance, and flexibility so as they are able to supplement their on ice training. Each off ice session deals with all of these three areas. Although the form in which they are introduced to the student/ athletes varies each time.

The programme places an emphasis on the jumping factor, focusing on basic jumps and jump combinations. For example: the loop jump is usedfrequently to align the athletes into a back spin, or correct air positions. The exercise s expanded to a loop-loop or even a loop-loop-loop.
Balance is a very important part of skating, as well. With the average jump lasting ~0.5 seconds in the air, a skater has to be able to adjust their position to possibly correct mistakes made at take off. Their ability to detect the their misalignment, and correct it, is directly connected to how good their balance is.

Flexibility is another secondary skill that is taught. Because of the young age group of the students Most young skaters tend to be fairly flexible. Our classes focus strengthing flexibility. Strengthening the flexible muscles improves the skaters ability to move through positions in a controlled manner.

Mirrors are used so that the students are able to see what a Proper position feels like. They are taught to correct their positions Using the mirrors by visually mimicking the proper position and then Transferring that visual correction into a feeling in the muscle. Eventually, the students will be able to correct their position through 'muscle memory'.

The off ice programme is delivered to the athletes, who are between the ages of 6 and up, in a fun, enjoyable way. Sometimes team skill games are played to promote a healthy competitive spirit.
